Recently there was a debate over the crafting of a new farm bill in the United States House of Representatives that got rather controversial because it seemed like neither side of the aisle was willing to budge. One side said the bill contained absolutely no tax increase at all. The other side that this was a larger part of what would already be the largest tax increase in American history.

Collin Peterson, a nine term Democrat from Minnesota who is a certified public accountant and chairman of the House Agriculture Committee was debating all day back and forth on the floor with Bob Goodlatte, a Republican from Virginia who is the Ranking Member on the Committee about whether this bill contained a tax increase.

Peterson said this was about closing tax loopholes for foreign companies who do business in the United States, but do not pay their fair share in taxes. Goodlatte claims that this bill would make the U.S. less competitive around the world because it punished foreign companies who buy U.S. goods as well as hurt our own companies by increasing their tax burden.

Now for pete sakes, this is the farm bill. A bill which helps put clothes on the backs of and feed millions of Americans and countless people around the world. There still has to be a bitter argument over it in Washington, D.C. final vote on the house portion of the bill was 231-191 That's one hundred and ninety one total votes wanting to make serious changes to a farm bill.

The farm bill is something that is suppose to get overwhelming bi-partisan support. Farm bills are done every five years so that gives farmers time to find out if the current system is working. For the final passage of a farm bill to get that many votes against it proves there is too much partisan bickering in Washington and we need to come together as a nation.

This is why the Bipartisan Policy Center which has been founded by four former U.S Senators Howard Baker (R-TN), Tom Daschle (D-SD), Bob Dole (R-KS) and George Mitchell (D-ME). Now you may say if you are worried about too much partisanship then why did you put their party affiliation behind each of their names? Well, that is to verify that the founding of this was truly fifty-fifty.

The stated goal of this center according to their website is basically to develop solutions that create real progress for America. In fact on this very topic the Bipartisan Policy Center released a report that says farmers of America should let the free market system do the heavy lifting and to not be so dependent upon government subsidies.

This type of report would have been in line with the Flake-Kind Amendment which would have cut farm subsidies for former farmers who are now dead, but still receive government assistance. It was a bi-partisan amendment. Kind being a Democrat from La Crosse, Wisconsin and Flake being a Republican from Snowflake, Arizona. Yes, he really is from Snowflake, Arizona. The amendment failed by a wide margin. To tell you the truth I think it is the ideological purists who are causing these problems who want people of political parties to fall in line like sheep.

These groups include They Work for Us and The Club for Growth. Groups such as these discourage independent thought and compromise on legislation and lead the American people nowhere. This is why I urge everyone to learn more about the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington, D.C. When you have groups calling for the removal of a United States Senator like Lindsey Graham by means of a Republican primary contest mainly based on simply his support for the Kennedy-McCain immigration bill, then there is a problem with the shifts in the political winds of America.
